Grammar (pg. 21)

The grammar point on this page is describing the condition of having performed an action in the past, thus having the experience of performing that action. The equivalent Japanese grammar is したことがあります. Here is one way to introduce the grammar.

  1. Ask a student, "Do you sometimes go to <name of popular town/city/area near the school>"?
  2. Ask the student where they go when they go to that location (stores, restaurants, arcades, movie theaters, etc.)
    1. I try to get a couple places they have been and one they have not.
  3. Rephrase the information to let them see the new grammar:
    1. Yoshi has been to <place 1>
    2. Yoshi has been to <place 2)
    3. Yoshi has not been to <place 3>
  4. Next, come up with some easy sentences:
    1. Eat cold pizza
    2. Go to Tokyo
    3. See Mt. Fuji
  5. Change those sentences, with the help of the students, to the target grammar:
    1. I have eaten cold pizza.
    2. I have been to Tokyo.
    3. I have seen Mt. Fuji.

This is a very useful grammar that students can use all the time.
