Unpaid Leave
From HyogoAJET
Aside from the specific cases provided for under Special Leave, unpaid leave technically does not exist, and your contracting organization isn't required to grant it (if they are even able to). Every now and then a JET will use up all of their paid leave, and then when an emergency comes up they are unable to take anymore leave. There have been cases where a JET leaves anyway, only to find out that because they violated their contract, their contracting organization will not provide them with a flight home. Don't let this happen to you!!! Guard your nenkyu preciously, and always save a few days, just in case.
Still, sometimes there are exceptions to the rules. If you have a situation (a sick relative, etc) and you want to take more leave than you have left, talk to your contracting organization. They might be able to work out something, though you shouldn't get your hopes up.
